There will be fish: Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson film in Whitby.

Images of Daniel Day-Lewis shooting in Whitby have recently been spotted on a local photographer’s website, which seems to support rumors that the relationship between Daniel Day-Lewis and director Paul Thomas Anderson – their first since 2007. There Will Be Blood in which Daniel Day-Lewis bagged an Oscar – is finally becoming real.

Images of the cast and crew in North Yorkshire seem to give proof that the actor is filming a new movie – perhaps called Phantom Thread – directed by There Will Be Blood filmmaker.

In photographs shared by Glenn Kilpatrick, the Whitby-based photographer, one can see several cast and crew members including Day-Lewis, working in the quiet village of Lythe located north of Whitby and to the south in Robin Hood Bay. Period costumes, and several period cars, give away the fact that the film is set in the 1950s.

This would seem to connect with Anderson and Day-Lewis about to shoot the “50s fashion drama” which has a budget of $35m, in Rift Valley in a report last year. However, there is confusion over whether the film is going to be set in London or New York – however, if Daniel Day-Lewis is, as some have conjectured, embodying the role of the real-life fashion designer Charles James, then it could be London and New York as James was active in both.

Though the marketing department remains tight-lipped about the official title of the film, reports from the set point to it being Phantom Thread. In 2009 a UK company was registered under that name, with well-known producer Megan Ellison the only director of record.
